Flossy’s Fountain in #miznerpark #bocaraton #fl #florida #beautifulfla Long time South Florida benefactor, Florence (Flossy) Keesely, had been involved in show business for most of her life. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she met and married husband Nick in 1932 and soon moved to New York City. Flossy moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1966 moving to Boca Raton 10 years later. She became heavily involved in the community and in numerous charities including the Habilitation Center for the Handicapped, the Boca Ballet, Harid Conservatory, Lynn University, Florida Atlantic University, and the Boca Delray Music Society. Flossys Fountain is a seven foot bronze sculpture and fountain at the entrance to the pavilion and amphitheater created by Israeli sculptor, Yaacov Heller. The sculpture is a likeness of Flossy. Flossy has sponsored countless musical and theatrical performances, including the Florida Ziegfeld Girls, the Caldwell Theater, and the Symphony of the Americas.   (at Mizner Park Amphitheater)

Welcome to the Desert Inn in Yeehaw Junction, FL

The Desert Inn  in #yeehawjunction #florida was founded as a trading post in the 1880. The present building dates before 1925 and served as a supply and recreational center for cattle drovers, lumber men and tourists during the era when much of #osceolacounty was still undeveloped wilderness in #southfl. Cowmen working the free ranging cattle on the palmetto prairie lands in #fl came to the Desert Inn to eat, drink and dance at this oasis in #beautifulfla where they could enjoy some relief from their arduous labors. Local patrons of the trading post and restaurant included African Americans and Seminoles who had to grapple with separate facilities during the era of segregation. The construction of roads in the 1930s brought tourists to the area and a set of overnight cabins were erected behind the original building. While the Desert Inn was still a popular place to stop, this historical roadside motel is now closed. Apparently after mating they remain stuck together for a couple of days. #florida motorists are well acquainted with them because, unfortunately they often get caught, in pari delicto, on the windshield of many cars driving on the interstate. Bust of Maestro Mark S. Azzolina (Lt Col US Air Force, retired)

In the early 1950s, the site directly across from Boca Raton's Old Town Hall, formerly a bus station, sat empty. In 1953, owner of the land, Eleanor Sanborn, generously allowed the town's annual holiday celebrations to take place there. By 1955, she donated the land to the city in memory of her late husband, Boca Raton part time resident Dr. William E. Sanborn, a wealthy Detroit dentist. The small park became the city's town square, hosting numerous gatherings. As the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency was established and began making improvements to the downtown district, local residents voted in 1983 to expand Sanborn Square, removing the portion of Boca Raton Road that bisected the park. Benefactors Charles and Dorothy Schmidt made this improvement possible through a generous donation of additional land just north of Boca Raton Road. In 1985, the community celebrated the dedication of the new Sanborn Square. Today, Sanborn Square remains the heart of Downtwon Boca. It is a green and shady oasis amidst all the activity of a vibrant and lively downtown district and is host to many events year round.
