Return to Green Cay Wetlands, Boynton Beach, FL

This egret is poised to strike looking for a morsel to gulp down in the #greencaywetlands in #boyntonbeach #fl
They stand perfectly still pointed like an arrow and when something wanders within the range of its long neck it explodes quickly into action! Just another #beautifulfla day in #palmbeachcounty #florida #birdwatching (at Green Cay Preserve)

Delray Beach, FL

In 1895 some of the very first ‘snowbirds’ arrived from #Michigan. These #Michigander pioneers settled a wilderness then known as #Linton. In 1927 areas east and west of the intracoastal were united as Delray Beach. Here are some views of Delray Beach including the coast, the #intracoastal, the 100’ Christmas tree in Old School Square Park and a view peering along East Atlantic on a #beautifulfla day in #delraybeach #delraybeachfl #fl #florida #palmbeachcounty (at Delray Beach, Florida)

Australian Pine Canopy along A1A in Gulf Stream, FL

North Ocean Boulvard in Gulf Stream, FL is now a part of A1A. This particular stretch of A1A was designated to preserve the last remaining stretch of Australian pine canopy and the original character of the road from the 1920s. Australian pines were planted in the 1920s as a windbreak straight up to the freeze line. A quick growing tree, the trees form a shaded canopy over the road which I much appreciated as I bicycled this afternoon on another #beautifulfla day in #gulfstreamfl #gulfstream #florida #fl #palmbeachcounty #a1a (at Gulf Stream, Florida)

Butterfly World, Coconut Creek, FL

Enjoyed my visit to #Butterfly World in #coconutcreekfl #coconutcreek #fl in particular I enjoyed the #lorikeet experience where you can feed the lorikeets as they perch on your hand. Of course, as expected, #butterflies abound. The one pictured here was my personal favorite because it was kind enough to pose for those picture. Finally the blue #parakeet made me nostalgic for my childhood pet parakeet who I fondly remember. I named him after #burtandernie because we all know Ernie is a fun guy. Definitely worth a visit for a half day in #beautifulfla #browardcounty #butterflyworld #butterflyworldflorida #florida (at Butterfly World)

St. Lucie River, Hobe Sound, FL

Can you spot the #alligator #gator lurking in the distance in the photo in the bottom right? This one was apparently very large, estimated to be 12’ long he was keeping an eye on the #floridafishing but kept a sufficient distance. #beautifulfla #hobesound #hobesoundfl #florida #fl (at Hobe Sound, Florida)

Green Heron (Butorides virescens maculata), Green Cay Wetlands, Boynton Beach, FL

This green heron (Butorides virescens maculata) sporting breeding plumage is looking for something to eat at Green Cay Wetlands preserve in #boyntonbeach #fl #florida Sure, just another picture of a bird but what makes the #greenheron interesting is that they are known to use tools. They will use bread crusts, insects or other items as bait. They will drop the bait on the surface of the water whereupon the green heron will grab and eat the fish. Must say, that’s pretty clever! In this picture the bird has his neck tucked, ultimately the neck is capable of significant extension allowing it to lunge for fish. This one was perfectly skill patiently hoping something yummy would happen by in #beautifulfla #floridabirds #floridabirdsofinstagram (at Green Cay Preserve)

Dateline July 1863, General Meade commands the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of #Gettysburg. No, this isn’t #PA this is #Jupiter, #FL and the #jupiterlighthouse , lying between the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse and the Hillsboro Lighthouse alerts sailors of its presence. Before his famous command during the #uscivilwar , then Lieutenant Meade made the original plans for this #lighthouse in 1853. The lighthouse would ultimately be completed in 1860. During the Civil War itself, the Confederates disabled the light so as not to aid the Union naval blockade. It would remain dark for the duration of the conflict. It stands at the confluence of the #loxahatcheeriver and #indianriver Picture taken from across the Loxahatchee River at U-Tiki restaurant. Visitors can climb the internal stairs to get to the top for a commanding view of the region. A recommended daytime for any #beautifulfla day in #florida #palmbeachcounty #jupiterfl
